World leaders express concern after report of attempted coup in Bolivia

World leaders expressed concern about the attempted coup d’état in Bolivia this Wednesday (26).

After question from CNN in a press conference, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said he asked Chancellor Mauro Vieira to call authorities from the South American country and the Brazilian ambassador “so that we can have a position”.

“As I am a lover of democracy, I want democracy to prevail in Latin America. The coup never worked”, the Brazilian leader added.

The president of Chile , Gabriel Boric also spoke out on social media.

“From Chile, I express my concern about the situation in Bolivia. We express our support for democracy in our sister country and for the legitimate government of Luis Arce”, he highlighted.

“We strongly condemn the unacceptable action of force by a sector of the Army of that country. We cannot tolerate any violation of the legitimate constitutional order in Bolivia or anywhere else,” he wrote on his X account.

The secretary general of Organization of American States (OAS) , Luis Almagro condemned the situation in Bolivia, sending solidarity to Luis Arce.

“The Army must submit to the legitimately elected civil power,” he warned.

Almagro also stressed that “any violation of the legitimate constitutional order” will not be tolerated.

Evo Morales , former Bolivian president accused the troops of planning a coup d’état under the command of General Juan José Zuniga.

He called for “national mobilization to defend democracy”.

“We will not allow the Armed Forces to violate democracy and intimidate the people”, he concluded.

The president of Mexico , Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also condemned the situation in Bolivia.

“We strongly condemn the attempted coup d’état in Bolivia. Our full support and support for President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora, the authentic democratic authority of this people and brotherly country,” he said in X.

In turn, the president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, said that “the attack on democracy and the Bolivian people shown in the images of the international media this afternoon is outrageous.” He condemned the coup attempt and extended solidarity to the people of the South American country.

The president of Venezuela , Nicolás Maduro , denounced the “coup against Bolivian democracy”. “At this moment, forces that betrayed their oath of loyalty to the State took over the presidential palace in La Paz,” he highlighted.

The president of Honduras , Xiomara Castro published in X: “I urgently appeal to the presidents of the CELAC member countries to condemn the fascism that today threatens democracy in Bolivia and demand full respect for civil power and the Constitution.”

“Military forces have once again carried out a criminal coup. We express our unconditional support to the brotherly people of Bolivia, to President @LuchoXBolivia and to @evoespueblo,” he highlighted.

Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia , asked the Bolivian people to resist. “Latin America must unite in favor of democracy. The Colombian embassy must provide refuge to the persecuted. An anti-democratic coup is confronted with the widespread mobilization of the people”, he stated.

Another country that spoke out on the matter was Peru , highlighting that he supports the people and the constitutional government of Luis Arce. He also rejected any act that compromises the country’s democratic and institutional order.

Luis Lacalle Pou, president of Paraguay, highlighted: “We strongly condemn the events underway in Bolivia led by a sector of its Armed Forces, which undermine its democratic and constitutional order. We express our solidarity with the legitimate government of President Luis Arce.”

There was also repercussion outside Latin America. O Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez , said that his government “vehemently condemns the military movements in Bolivia. We send our support and solidarity to the Government of Bolivia and its people, and we ask for respect for democracy and the rule of law.”

Also in Europe, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen commented: “I strongly condemn the attempts to overthrow the democratically elected government of Bolivia. The European Union supports democracies. We express our strong support for the constitutional order and the rule of law in Bolivia.”

Charles Michael, the European Union’s top diplomat, also condemned the situation. “The European Union supports democracy and the Bolivian people”, he pointed out.
