World needs to be on alert for variants of Covid-19, says infectologist

Infectologist Demetrius Montenegro assesses that the high number of cases of Covid-19 in China and the subvariant X.BB.1.5 in the United States cause concern.

In an interview with CNN Radio he warned that this is not the time to let your guard down.

“We can only stop worrying when we have a vaccine capable of cutting transmission, such as influenza, in addition to reducing serious cases.”

According to him, until that happens, Covid “will continue to scare”: “The world needs to be on alert.”

He highlights that everyone should seek vaccination, which is proven to be effective: “We all saw that in the last wave, people without complete immunization were the ones that evolved into serious cases and deaths.”

According to the infectologist, the subvariants of the coronavirus ended up bringing a “greater escape in relation to the immunological issue.”

“That is why it is extremely important for the bivalent vaccine to arrive in Brazil, which increases protection against Ômicron variants and subvariants, which have greater transmission power.”

Demetrius also classified the choice of Nísia Trindade for the Ministry of Health as “the dream of every infectologist.”

According to him, she will take public health seriously, with social responsibility.
