The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) released a report confirming that the world has more than 110 million displaced people, a historic record.
For comparison purposes, this number is equivalent to about half of the Brazilian population.
According to the document Global Trends in Forced Displacement, released this Wednesday (14), conflicts in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria, in addition to the recent civil war in Sudan, have led to a large increase in the number of displaced people and refugees.
Both groups involve people who have been forced to leave their homes, but the displaced remain in their countries, while refugees cross borders to seek help in other nations.
In the case of Ukraine, for example, it is estimated that more than eight million people have left the country in search of refuge, while another six million have been internally displaced.
UNHCR recalls, however, that it is not just wars that force people to move. Factors such as discrimination, political violence, poverty and climate change also force these displacements in many cases.
“It is quite an eye-opener about the state of our world to have to report this,” lamented the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi .
According to the report, in the two decades prior to the conflict in Syria, which began in 2011, the global level was practically stable at around 40 million refugees and internally displaced people. But the number has increased dramatically since then.
From 2021 to 2022 alone, there was an increase of more than 19 million people in these situations. Now, one in 74 people is now displaced, the report found.
