Today it is celebrated World Nature Day, established by the UN eight years ago and which this year is dedicated to forests and ecosystems threatened by human activities. Every year the March 3 the world’s attention is drawn to a different theme. This year’s is “Forests and livelihoods: supporting people and the planet”.
Between 200 and 350 million people live in or near wooded areas around the world, relying on the ecosystem for their livelihood and to cover their most basic needs, such as food, shelter, energy and medicines.
About 28% of the world’s land surface is currently managed by indigenous peoples, including some of the most ecologically intact forests on the planet. These spaces are not only central to their economic and personal well-being, but also to their cultural identities.
