The World Obesity Atlas 2022, released this Sunday (8), points out that one billion people worldwide will be obese by 2030.
The survey, carried out by the World Obesity Federation, predicts that one in five women and one in seven men will be living in this condition eight years from now.
The findings highlight that countries will not only fail to meet the targets imposed by 2025, but will also double the number of obese people in a few years.
The largest number of people living with obesity are in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with numbers more than doubling across all LMICs and tripling in low-income countries compared to 2010 rates.
The report introduces a new Communicable Disease Preparedness (NCD) Index, showing that the 30 most prepared countries are high-income, while the 30 least prepared countries are all low-income, raising concerns about the impact on already vulnerable populations.
There is a global call to end the underinvestment and stigmatization of obesity that is driving this systemic failure, which calls for current governments to take action so that the number of obese people declines in the coming years.
