John Alfred Tinniswood was born in the same year that the Titanic sank. It was also the same year that New Mexico and Arizona became American states.
Now, the world’s oldest living man, who was born on August 26, 1912, is celebrating his 112th birthday.
According to Guinness World Records (GWR), Tinniswood celebrated the occasion with friends and family at a retirement home in the seaside town of Southport in western England.
Approaching his birthday, Tinniswood told GWR that he didn’t feel “different” about turning 112, adding: “I don’t feel it, I don’t get excited about it. That’s probably why I’ve reached it. I just take it in stride, like anything else,” he said in a press release on Sunday (25).
In April of this year, he became the oldest man in the world — and his lineage already includes a son, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He is also the world’s oldest World War II veteran, according to the company.
According to Tinniswood, her main advice for staying healthy is to exercise in moderation.
He says he enjoys listening to the radio and still performs many daily tasks — like getting out of bed and managing his finances — without help.
“I can’t think of any special secrets that I have. I was quite active when I was young; I walked a lot. But to me, I’m no different (from anyone else). Nothing different,” he said.
Commenting on what he thinks the world will be like in the next 112 years, Tinniswood said: “Oh my. Well, I would like to say there will be more honesty between the various countries. All of them, including ours (England), they all show a little honesty now and then.”
Tinniswood is four years younger than the oldest living person, 116-year-old Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka. She took the title last week after the death of 117-year-old US-born Maria Branyas Morera.
There are still four years to go before Tinniswood becomes the oldest man of all time, a title that belongs to Japanese Jiroemon Kimura, who lived to be 116 years old (1897 – 2013).
The oldest person of all time was Jeanne Calment from France who lived 122 years (1875 – 1997).
