World’s oldest man dies at 112 in England

Guinness World Records reported on Tuesday (26) that John Tinniswood died at the age of 112. The Englishman was recognized as the oldest man in the world months ago.

The man was born the same year the Titanic sank and survived two world wars and two global pandemics.

Tinniswood passed away on Monday (25) at a care home in Southport, northwest England, surrounded by “music and love”, his family told Guinness World Records in a statement.

“John had many excellent qualities. He was intelligent, decisive, courageous, calm in any crisis, talented in mathematics and a great conversationalist,” his family said.

Born in August 1912 in Liverpool, he met his wife Blodwen at a dance before marrying her in 1942 at the height of the Second World War when he served in the British Army, which was responsible for finances and food supplies.

Tinniswood, who is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, later worked as an accountant in the oil industry before retiring in his 60s. His wife died in 1986.

From the age of 100 to 110, he received a birthday card every year from the late Queen Elizabeth, who was 14 years younger than him. She died in 2022.

Other than eating a portion of his favorite food (battered fish and chips) every Friday, Tinniswood followed no special diet.

He remained mentally active, following the news and managing his own finances, which may have contributed to his longevity, according to Guinness World Records.

When Guinness World Records awarded him the title of oldest man in the world in April this year, Tinniswood said there was no big secret to his longevity, insisting it was “just luck”.

“You either live long or you live short, and there’s not much you can do about it,” he said.
