Bigscreen, known for its eponymous virtual social platform, has unveiled a virtual reality headset that is claimed to be the smallest VR headset in the world. The device is called Beyond, weighs only 170 g with a strap and works in conjunction with a computer. For comparison, the weight of a similar model HTC Vive Flow is about 190 g.
The Bigscreen Beyond is equipped with two OLED displays with a resolution of 5K (5120×2560) and a refresh rate of 90Hz, tracking with six degrees of freedom (6DoF). There’s also a three-element optic that eliminates the so-called screen door effect (an artifact where fine lines separating pixels become visible), providing a 93-degree horizontal field of view.
The manufacturer does not offer any new technology to achieve this size. Rather sacrifices a few things. For example, for a perfect headset fit, Bigscreen asks you to scan your face using an iPhone app. Tracking relies on external SteamVR Base Stations, not built-in cameras, and headphones are only available as an option. Connection to the computer is carried out through a special box that provides power and is responsible for transmitting the picture.
Bigscreen claims that Beyond supports the SteamVR platform and works with any compatible controller (including the Vive and Valve Index) as well as full body trackers. These accessories will have to be purchased separately, as they are not included with the headset. You will also need a fairly powerful computer, at least with a quad-core processor and GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics.
The Bigscreen Beyond VR headset is now available for pre-order for $999. It’s cheaper than bulky, lower-res alternatives ($1,500 Meta Quest Pro and $1,099 HTC Vive XR Elite), but keep in mind that this isn’t a standalone headset. Deliveries are promised in the third quarter to the United States, and in the fourth quarter to Canada and Europe. By the end of this year – at the beginning of next year, the novelty will go on sale in other countries.
