THE steepest cable car in the world opened in mid-December in Bernese Alps in Switzerland. With capacity for 85 passengers and 6.8 tons of cargo, the cable car covers around 1.2 km in four minutes at a maximum gradient of 159.4%.
A total of 800 people per hour can be transported if the cable car operates at maximum capacity.
The route connects the village of Stechelberg in the municipality of Lauterbrunnen, at the station Murren located approximately 1,650 meters above sea level. The stations are part of the ski area and the mountain Schilthorn .
The section is part of the Schilthorn Cableway, which connects the Lauterbrunnen valley to the Schilthorn peak, 2,970 meters above sea level. The area is popular especially for winter sports and is part of the Jungfrau region.
Mürren station also connects with Birg station, which in turn connects with Schilthorn station. At almost 3,000 meters above sea level, the top of the mountain guarantees privileged views of other surrounding peaks, such as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.
The place has a revolving restaurant, the Pizza Gloria and also 15 panels that form a “hall of fame” in honor of the cast and collaborators of the film “007 – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, released in 1969 and filmed on the mountain.
The Schilthorn summit is currently closed due to construction work. baptized by Schilthornbahn 20XX the project aims to be completed in 2026 and aims to replace cable cars and rebuild mountain stations.
New cable cars
In addition to the steepest cable car in the world, a new vehicle was also introduced on one of the sections between Mürren and Birg stations. This is the Funifor, a new model in Europe and described as “exceptionally resistant to wind”, with capacity for 100 passengers.
The second Funifor vehicle on the same stretch will begin operating in November 2025.
Another section undergoing construction is from Birg to Schilthorn, which takes visitors to the top of the mountain. Schilthorn station is closed until March 2025, when the section will also begin operating a Funifor cable car. The second car is expected to enter service in spring 2026, completing the Schilthornbahn 20XX project.
As a result, the complete journey between the base and the top of the mountain, more specifically between the Stechelberg and Schilthorn stations, could be reduced by 10 minutes, taking 22 minutes.
