Worst port ever from Sony: Returnal on PC requires 32GB of RAM and doesn’t support crossplay

A few days ago, during The Game Awards 2022, employees of Sony Interactive Entertainment officially announced that the video game Returnal, which for a long time remained exclusive to the PlayStation 5, has lost such a prestigious status – it will be released very soon on PC. Actually, insiders talked about this a few months before the event, but now the information has been confirmed with a full-fledged trailer. And already yesterday, December 11, a video game page appeared on Steam, the description of which will greatly disappoint many potential fans of the hardcore shooter.

It’s all about the system requirements, which, to put it mildly, do not correspond to the level of the technical component of the project. For example, even the minimum system requirements for a video game indicate 16 GB of RAM – usually, even AAA-level flagship releases require so much RAM only to run the game at maximum settings. In addition, to run the game at the minimum graphics settings, the gamer needs to have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or higher 6 GB graphics card. Given that we are talking about Full HD resolution with basic image settings, such requirements look a bit excessive.

But the real disappointment comes when studying the recommended system requirements – the developers require 32 GB of RAM to be able to play at decent picture quality comfortably. In addition, the game requires an NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER graphics card or higher. These are just insane system requirements, since the PlayStation 5 has much lower performance and 32 GB of RAM is not there at all. Probably, the Sony developers failed to optimize the port of the game on the PC, or they did not pay much attention to this issue. At the moment, there are not so many video games that require 32 GB of RAM even among this year’s releases.

But the troubles of the ported game do not end there. It turned out that the developers decided not to implement crossplay between PC and PlayStation 5, so Returnal will support multiplayer co-op after the release on Steam, but there will be no opportunity to play with friends from another platform. This is very strange, since the game is not competitive, so there is no need to separate console gamers from PC cheaters – no one will definitely cheat in this project. At the same time, the opportunity to play in a co-op could well increase the popularity of the game on a PC, but it was simply abandoned.
