WSJ: US accuses Russia of recruiting Syrian mercenaries to fight in Ukraine

Russia has recently been recruiting Syrian mercenaries with experience in dealing with a guerrilla city to fight in its ranks in Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing US officials.

Moscow, which invaded Ukraine on February 24 and met with unprecedented resistance, has begun recruiting Syrian fighters in recent days to deploy them in operations to occupy urban areas, four US officials told a US newspaper.

Russia was involved in the 2015 war in Syria, alongside the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

A U.S. official has told the WSJ that some Syrian fighters are already in Russia preparing to take part in hostilities in Ukraine. This source did not go into further detail.

Foreign fighters are already present, on both sides, on the Ukrainian fronts.

Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, a former rebel who has become a loyal ally of the Kremlin, has shared videos with Chechen fighters in Ukraine and acknowledged that some of them were killed in battle.

On the other hand, tens of thousands of foreign volunteers have gone to Ukraine to join its forces, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba.

The capital, Kyiv, as well as the second largest city, Kharkiv, have always remained in the hands of the Ukrainian government, while Russia has seized Kherson, a city where it is a strategic port, and is escalating the bombing and siege of several urban centers in the city. the country.

The Russian invasion, which entered its twelfth day, forced more than 1.5 million people to flee Ukraine; the UN describes this refugee crisis as the fastest growing in Europe since World War II.
