THE Russia announced today that the local branch of the environmental organization WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) has been labeled an “undesirable organization”, which amounts to a ban on its activities in the country.
In its statement, Russia’s general prosecutor’s office accuses the organization’s Russian branch of causing “threats to security in the financial sector.” WWF organized “biased” campaigns against the energy industryoil and gas with the aim of limiting Russia’s economic growth, Moscow claims.
In May, the Greenpeace organization was also labeled “undesirable”.
WWF, which has been active in Russia since 1994, was labeled a “foreign agent” in March. This characterization, which implies that someone engages in espionage activities, eit has been attributed to many journalists, activists and others in recent years.
