Xi Jinping criticizes ‘abuse of international sanctions’ at BRICS summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping today criticized the “abuse of international sanctions”, calling on Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa to assume their global responsibilities.

“Our meeting today comes at a crucial time of choice for the future of humanity: as key emerging markets and developing countries, the BRICS countries must live up to their responsibilities,” Xi said through a translator. “We have strengthened unity and coordination,” he added.

“We must abandon the Cold War mentality, prevent confrontation and oppose unilateral sanctions and the misuse of sanctions,” Xi said. “Global economic recovery remains a difficult process, and peace and security are becoming increasingly important issues.”

The BRICS countries consist of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
