Xiaomi downgrades smartphone performance in Chrome and other apps

In early March, it turned out that Samsung artificially limits the performance of some of its devices in certain games and programs, and now Xiaomi with its current flagship series has also hit similar news headlines. The Android Police found that in the game Genshin Impact and in the Geekbench benchmark, smartphones demonstrate maximum performance, but in other applications it is limited.

During the experiment, journalists tested Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12X with different processors. They evaluated performance using a synthetic Geekbench test – comparing the results of the original application downloaded from Google Play with the performance of modified copies of the benchmark, masquerading as other applications.

Geekbench from Google Play Modified Geekbench Genshin Impact disguise Netflix disguise Chrome disguise
Xiaomi 12 Pro 1201 / 3394 738 / 3148 1119 / 3468 733 / 3065 737 / 3071
Xiaomi 12X 978 / 3289 712 / 3049 807 / 3314 708 / 3020 710 / 2973

The table above shows the results of single-core/multi-core tests. As you can see, when smartphones identify the application as Chrome and Netflix, gadgets significantly reduce performance (the performance of the single-core test drops especially strongly). The same is observed with an application unknown to the system (modified by Geekbench).

Interestingly, Xiaomi 12 Pro based on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor turned out to be more prone to underestimation of performance than Xiaomi 12X on last year’s Snapdragon 888. The manufacturer has not yet commented on the situation to Android Police, so it is not known how many smartphones of the company use different performance profiles for different applications (perhaps not the only two tested).

But the developers of Geekbench have already announced that they will conduct their own investigation and exclude the models convicted of “fraud” from the overall benchmark rating.
