Xiaomi launches its first charging chip: power up to 120W without overheating

More than two years ago, fast charging technology became one of the strategic objectives of Xiaomi. Since then, the company has built four large R&D centers and created a separate division in charge of this direction. Since then, the Chinese industrial giant has equipped hundreds of millions of its devices with fast charging systems and has applied for over 800 patents. At a certain stage, the company realized that it was pointless to just chase power indicators and that something else had to be invented. That is why Xiaomi has developed its first Surge P1 chip, which is responsible for powering and charging a mobile device. It took 18 months and $ 15.5 million to develop.

The key feature of the Surge P1 is that it provides 120W charging for a single battery, while the existing ultra-fast charging technology involves the use of two 2000-3000 mAh batteries. This saves space inside the body of the smartphone and makes it thinner. The chip has an intelligent temperature control system, with which it controls different types of loads and ensures the safe operation of the gadget.

The Surge P1 is also the industry’s first wireless charging chip with 97.5% efficiency. When the device is connected to a power source via a wire, the charging efficiency reaches 96.8%, and the heat loss is reduced by 30%. The controller supports a total of 15 modes, including ultra-fast reversible charging.

Xiaomi has said that the upcoming Mi 12 Pro flagship will be the first to receive the Surge P1 chip and will support 120W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W wireless reversible charging.
