At the end of 2019, Xiaomi Mobile filed documents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to register “Camera Module, Image Capture Device and Method”. The 28-page documentation was released on February 18, 2021, after which the patent was also included in the World Intellectual Property Organization database.
The patent describes a smartphone with a large frameless screen that does not have cutouts and holes. There will also be no front camera under the screen, since the smartphone will receive a special movable and rotary main camera module.
This module houses three image sensors and an LED flash. You can also use a quad camera as indicated in the detailed description. The rear camera system can be used to create selfies and video calls.
The documentation describes in detail the process of moving and rotating the camera, as well as the design of the drive. Xiaomi believes that avoiding the selfie camera will save some money, although this is controversial given the new mechanism, while users will be able to take the highest quality selfies on different cameras.
It is not yet known if Xiaomi will apply the patented technology in the final product.
