Samsung today unveiled the world’s first 200MP smartphone image sensor (announced in a separate note) and confirmed that the sensor will begin shipping in 2021. This means that the first smartphones with a 200 megapixel camera should hit the market within the next four months, but the Xiaomi 12 will not be among them.
Despite the fact that the Xiaomi 12 is expected to be released this year, a well-known insider under the nickname Digital Chat Station claims that Xiaomi has abandoned the idea of using a 200-megapixel sensor in its new flagship. Xiaomi has been actively using 108MP image sensors for the past couple of years, however, it seems that Xiaomi has followed Huawei’s lead and stopped the megapixel race.

According to Digital Chat Station, the two engineering samples of the Xiaomi 12 are equipped with 50-megapixel image sensors in the main camera, while they support video recording at 1920 frames per second. The difference between the regular and older Xiaomi 12 models, it is alleged, lies in the image sensors used in the additional cameras.
Earlier, the same source said that the main, ultra-wide-angle and periscope cameras of the new flagship Xiaomi will be equipped with image sensors with a resolution of 50 megapixels. In this case, the smartphone will provide 5x optical zoom.
The Xiaomi 12, which is rumored to be unveiled as early as November this year, will be the world’s first smartphone based on the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC.
Digital Chat Station was the first to accurately report the specifications and release dates of the Redmi K30, K40, Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 11.
