The Federal Police and the National Force with the support of the National Indian Foundation are on their way to the Xipaya Indigenous Land, 400 kilometers from the municipality of Altamira, in southeastern Pará, as the PF reported this Friday (15).
The mobilization took place after chief Juma Xipaya, from the Karimãa village, released a video on social media stating that indigenous leaders saw a large raft with machinery for extracting gold, moving along the Iriri River, and that they were already destroying their territory. indigenous. She reported that her father, Francisco Kuruaya, went to find out what was happening and ended up being punched and shoved.
The deployment of security forces to the area aims to combat environmental crimes and avoid confrontation between indigenous people and prospectors, due to the possible illegal invasion of the Iriri Reserve, for gold extraction. Another team from the National Force that was guarding an ICMBio inspection in the Iriri Extractive Reserve, which is close to the Xipaia Indigenous Land, is already at the site.
The work to contain a possible incident in that indigenous territory was started on Thursday night, by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, and according to the Chief of the Service for Repression of Crimes Against Indigenous Communities, Deputy Paulo Teixeira, as soon as they received the complaint began preparations for sending the teams to protect the region where the Karimãa village, of the Xipaya ethnic group, is located. The delegate also informed that, at least so far, there are no reports of serious conflicts.
In the Xipaya territory, 200 people live in an area of 179,000 hectares. Teams from the National Indian Foundation – Funai and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation – ICMBio are also monitoring the situation, and are in permanent contact with the security forces, in order to avoid any type of conflict.
