Y2K: Gen Z’s darling trend may revive admiration for extreme thinness

Young people are nostalgic. At least, that’s what one of the most viewed hashtags on TikTok shows us: with more than 8 billion views on TikTok’s social network. Generation Z the hashtag #y2k is a reference to “years 2000” or “years 2000”, which is nothing more than a way for younger people to revisit what was trending or very striking at the beginning of this century.

The y2k aesthetic has been adopted by Gen Z mainly in two ways: in the return of analog cameras, in a search for a more natural and less “Instagrammable” photo, and in the way of dressing.

Following this trend, clothing brands bet on references from the 2000s to create collections and conquer the young audience.

But this behavioral trend is accompanied by a warning: in the aesthetics of the 2000s, a cult of excessive thinness was very common. Whether in the speeches of movie characters, in pop singers who were successful or in the famous Victoria’s Secret angel parade, being beautiful, at the time, was synonymous with being thin.

Therefore, when a younger generation returns to admire what was cool at that time, experts begin to pay attention to this possible risk factor. O CNN Popverse discussed this matter. Watch the full video above.
