The Cujo, famous yacht used by Princess Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed in the European summer holidays of 1997, sank on Saturday (29) in the French Riviera.
The information was confirmed through an official Facebook post from the Guard of the Alpes-Maritimes, a department located in the south of France, which borders Monaco and Italy.
As informed by the coast guard of the commune of Antibes, at 12:30 am local time, the yacht sank in the Mediterranean Sea after hitting an unidentified object about 30 km from Beaulieu-sur-Mer – another commune on the French Riviera.
Local authorities said that the 7 people who were on board the vessel were rescued. The Cujo, in turn, sank and ended up at a depth of about 2,500 meters.
The coast guard and medical teams remained on site monitoring the vessel, which sank with about 7,000 liters of diesel in its tanks.
During the month of August 1997, Diana and Dodi enjoyed their summer vacation sailing through popular places in France, such as Saint-Tropez, and won the pages of newspapers and magazines. At the time, the yacht belonged to the princess’s boyfriend.
On the 31st of that month, the couple died after suffering a car accident in Paris. Fayed and the driver, who both had high blood alcohol levels, died instantly. Diana died at the Pitié-Salpetriere hospital.
