Yandex reported a large leak of user data discovered through the fault of one of its employees. An internal leak was discovered during a routine security check.

As the press service notes, during an internal investigation, it was discovered that a Yandex employee provided unauthorized access to users’ mailboxes. He was one of three system administrators with such access rights required for technical support of the service. As a result of the employee’s actions, 4887 e-mail boxes were compromised.
As Yandex emphasizes, unauthorized access to compromised mailboxes has already been blocked, and their owners received a notification about the need to change the password from their account.
An internal investigation is underway at Yandex. Following the investigation, measures will be taken to minimize the impact of the human factor on the security of user data. The company also contacted law enforcement agencies.
