Yandex joined FAS in antitrust case against Apple

Yandex together with the Russian Association of Online Cinemas decided to support the position of the Federal Antimonopoly Service in the case against Apple. We are talking about the prohibition of the American company from making payments bypassing the App Store, which, moreover, has set high commissions for transactions within applications. As the RBC edition notes with reference to the Kommersant newspaper, the Russian regulator has already accepted Yandex’s petition.

Yandex believes that people should be able to make in-app purchases in any way convenient for them. The decision in this case can have a big impact not only on users, but also on developers. The FAS filed a case against Apple last fall. Prior to that, she was issued a warning and was given a term until September 30 to correct the violations. The company prohibits developers from informing users about alternative payment methods. At the same time, she takes a commission from each payment in the App Store in the amount of 15 to 30%. If we are talking about a subscription to an online cinema, then tens and hundreds of millions of rubles go into Apple’s pocket, says Alexey Byrdin, CEO of the Internet Video Association.

The American company faces a fine from 100 thousand rubles to 2% of the proceeds, which could amount to more than a billion rubles. Initially, Epic Games had similar claims to Apple, which had a long lawsuit with the Cupertinians, but in the end lost the case. After that, claims against Apple began to arise from regulators in the United States and Europe.
