Yandex search adapted for programmers: Stack Overflow answers right in the search results and not only

Today, September 20, Yandex employees talked about a significant upgrade of their search engine using the latest CS YATI neural network, which was trained on various documentation written for IT specialists, as well as on the assessments of programming specialists. Accordingly, now the search results for developers and machine learning specialists will be much better, plus the process of navigating through various queries has become more convenient and takes less time to find the right content. For example, Yandex representatives report that the new neural network model takes into account one and a half times more data from each page than the previous version called YATI. And, apparently, the neural network will work best in English, which is quite logical.

“It is known that the lion’s share of programmer requests are requests in English. CS YATI was trained mainly on English-language sources. We didn’t just improve the search for programmers: in the process, we also improved the search for English-language sources,” Alexey Gusakov, Head of Machine Intelligence and Research, Yandex.

In order to achieve such an impressive result, the new version of the neural network was allowed to analyze a huge number of search queries and websites that were shown in search results for all kinds of queries directly related to programming. Thanks to this, the neural network has learned to better evaluate the quality of content and the relevance of the issue for a specific request, which should greatly simplify the life of the user. Yandex even stated that in total the neural network passed through itself whole terabytes of documents related to programming, as well as the search history of experts in this field.

Ultimately, CS YATI even learned to predict which link a programmer would click on in order to display the most relevant content. But the important improvements don’t end there – the company has significantly improved the so-called enriched answers from the Stack Overflow project, which programmers from various fields use to find important information or answers to their questions almost all the time. Now the user does not have to follow the link in the search results – the search will “pull” the data with the question, the best answer to it and comments that may be useful to the programmer, directly into the search results.
