Third-generation Yandex courier robots appeared on the streets of Moscow and Innopolis, and the company itself shared details on the process of creating new rovers on its blog. Several teams are working on them at once – from designers and constructors to those who interact with robots every day. This is how a concept is created, then a detailed 3D model, a working prototype and a production prototype.
The new model received a discreet color scheme and LED headlights. The shape has become more square, due to which the useful volume of the compartment for the carriage of goods has increased (60 liters, up to 20 kg). It now holds five-liter bottles of water or six 40-centimeter pizzas and four two-liter bottles of soda. The cross-country ability of the robot has also improved. It is equipped with a soft suspension, which makes it easier to overcome curbs and various obstacles.
The third generation of courier robots have a new lidar located at the front of the body. Thanks to a wider vertical viewing angle and an increased number of beams emitted, the robot sees better near objects. In addition, it was equipped with new cameras and another additional camera with a long focal length. It is located under the lidar and helps the robot see traffic lights across the street, even across a very wide road.

For uninterrupted operation of the rover, Yandex engineers decided to install a removable battery. Now there is no need to waste time on charging, battery replacement takes less than a minute. At this point, power is supplied from a small backup battery.
Most of the parts and components of robots are developed and tested in-house. The most important elements are carefully checked on special equipment or on previous generation rovers, such as suspension, summer and winter tires. The equipment of the robot is also tested for extreme temperatures (from -40 to + 60 ° C) and tightness.
Before the courier robot is released into the streets, it is sent to a test site. The third-generation rovers were tested in summer in 35-degree heat, and in order to test the new suspension in a snowy winter, a site with artificial snow was created. At the first stage of its work, the rover drives to addresses without load, and after a week it is fully used. The new robots will initially work alongside second-generation models, but will gradually push them out of the streets completely.
