Yanomami denounce miners for rape and death of 12-year-old girl

The Yanomami community denounced the death of a 12-year-old indigenous girl, who was allegedly raped by prospectors. The crime allegedly took place in the Waikás region, in Roraima, one of the areas affected by illegal mining.

The president of the Yanomami and Ye’kuana Indigenous Health District Council, Júnior Hekurari Yanomami, spoke about the case in a video posted on his Twitter account. “I was told that the miners invaded the community, took a woman and a teenager. The teenager was 11, 12 years old. The miners raped her, raped her and (this) caused her death.”

In the video, he also claims that a 4-year-old child, who was with the older woman, is missing in the river. See the publication:

In a note sent to CNN, the National Indian Foundation (Funai) said that it is following the case in conjunction with the security forces and is available to collaborate with the work to protect the community. Funai also stated that it has been continuously involved in inspection actions in the region.

THE CNN also sought out the Federal Public Ministry, but has not yet received a response.
