Yanomami District denounced in December the lack of personnel to act against hunger

Document obtained by CNN shows that technicians from the Yanomami Special Indigenous Health District (DSEI) reported in December 2022 that they did not have enough personnel to act against malnutrition in the indigenous land, which is experiencing a humanitarian crisis.

In addition, professionals reported that they only had eight doctors to work in 34 points, also denouncing the sexual exploitation of women and adolescents in the region.

The DSEI are the management and execution areas of the Unified Health System (SUS) in indigenous territories.

The Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, said that the district will be subject to federal intervention. In addition, Funai’s representation in Roraima will also have an intervenor, as a way of guaranteeing a faster response to the government’s actions to resolve the crisis.

In a meeting at the end of last year, DSEI Yanomami technicians reported several problems in the territory, such as the lack of people to work in the execution of the plan to combat hunger, the existence of only eight doctors to work in 34 posts, the lack of air support for the removal of patients, the spread of malaria and reports of sexual exploitation of women and adolescents.

Problems reported in documents obtained by CNN are yet another proof of how many authorities of the federal and state governments were aware of the serious problems that affected the indigenous people.

Intervention in the Yanomami DSEI had been requested by the Federal Public Ministry in November 2022 due to reports of misuse of public resources for the purchase of medicines.
