Yanomami woman dies after being hospitalized with severe malnutrition

Rodenia Yanomami, 33, died last Friday (27) at the General Hospital of Roraima, in Boa Vista, after being hospitalized with severe malnutrition and worsening due to dehydration and intestinal inflammation, as described in the declaration of death to which CNN had access.

The indigenous woman had already been to two health units, in the community of Cataroa and in the Basic Health Unit of Surucucu, but the places did not have ideal conditions for care. When she arrived at the hospital, the condition had already worsened, according to a relative of the victim.

Rodenia’s children, who also went through the same health units, were rescued and are still hospitalized at the Children’s Hospital in Boa Vista.

THE CNN spoke with Junior Hekurari, president of URIHI – Associação Yanomami, who confirmed the death of the indigenous woman and five other people in recent days, in the communities of Komatha and Aracaca. Among the victims are an indigenous leader and a nine-year-old child.

“Yesterday (27) I received information that five (indigenous people) had died in two communities close to the prospectors’ camp. Three indigenous people, all young, who were with them were rescued and tested positive for malaria. They are hospitalized at the UBS in Surucucu undergoing treatment, but they are very weak”, he explains.

Hekurari explains that the bodies were found in an area of ​​difficult access and that it was only possible to locate them with the help of a helicopter.

“There’s only one body there. The others were burned yesterday,” she says.
