The year 2024 is predicted to be recorded as the hottest in history. The warning comes from a report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), released this Monday (12) by Climatempo.
According to the meteorological agency, this forecast is explained by the high global average temperature which, between January and September this year, reached 1.54°C above pre-industrial levels, a factor driven by the El Niño phenomenon and the continuous increase in greenhouse gases.
The “State of the Climate 2024” report, released by the WMO during COP29, also highlights that the period from 2015 to 2024 will be the hottest on record, as extreme weather becomes frequent, with an increase in cyclones, record rainfall and significant heat waves.
For Celeste Saulo, secretary general of the WMO, the goal is to keep warming – in the long term – below 2°C and limit the 1.5°C mark.
Furthermore, annual climate anomalies can occur due to other natural phenomena (such as El Niño) and do not necessarily reflect the sustained average warming that the Paris Agreement aims to contain. “Each increase in warming brings new challenges, increasing the impact of events such as severe droughts, forest fires and devastating floods,” says Celeste.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, the Paris Agreement aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change and to reinforce the capacity of countries to deal with the impacts resulting from these changes.
The WMO emphasizes that, to face these phenomena, it is necessary to expand climate monitoring and early warning services to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
COP29
The annual UN climate summit began this Monday (11), when several negotiations regarding finance and trade take place, a year after climate disasters that encouraged developing countries to stake their demands for climate finance.
Officials meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, hope to resolve the main item on the COP29 summit agenda – a deal for up to $1 trillion in annual climate finance for developing countries, replacing a $100 billion target.
