Year-end family gatherings also demand care, says immunologist

In an interview with CNN Radio, the immunologist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo, Jorge Kalil, agreed with the capital’s decision to cancel New Year’s Eve parties.

There are already 23 capitals and the Federal District that have turned back in the celebrations. “This is not the time to make large gatherings, especially indoors in clubs or whatever”, he said.

Kalil also made another reservation: “Even when families come together, in small agglomerations, they have to be careful, if possible test to see if they have the virus, we are subject to transmitting even if vaccinated.”

Another concern of the immunologist is with the Ômicron variant: “It is not known with what force it will arrive, hopefully it will be like Delta, difficult to predict, we have to think very calmly if Carnival is worth it, we have to keep our health to recover professional activities, we are all suffering from it, it’s not time to party.”

About the new strain, Kalil explained that, from a theoretical point of view, “vaccines will reduce their effectiveness a little”: “They won’t be as protective, they give a big advantage compared to non-vaccinated ones, but whoever gets sick doesn’t get very sick .”
