US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will honor other pioneers as she presides over Thursday’s unveiling of the first US banknotes printed with two women’s signatures, while calling for “much more” effort. to promote equity for women and minorities.
Yellen, the first woman to lead the Treasury and chair the Federal Reserve, said the new notes produced at the Treasury’s Engraving and Printing Department in Fort Worth, Texas, are a reminder of the contributions of women who have worked in the Treasury and in the profession of economist.
She will be joined on site by Treasury Chief Lynn Malerba, the first Native American to serve in that role.
The notes, which will be delivered to the Federal Reserve for circulation next year, are the first to carry the signature of both a Treasury head and a native.
“We have made progress in providing greater economic opportunities for women in the Treasury and in the economics profession. But we know much more needs to be done,” Yellen said in prepared remarks for the event. “I hope that today is a reminder of the path we have traveled in equity and inclusion. And I hope it motivates us to keep moving forward.”
