Yellow fever virus detected in monkey sample in Belo Horizonte

The yellow fever virus was detected in a sample from a monkey found in the Sion neighborhood, located in the South-Central region of Belo Horizonte.

The confirmation took place at the beginning of this month, according to the city hall of the capital of Minas Gerais.

As soon as the animal was located, teams from the Municipal Health Department carried out inspections with the aim of eliminating breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito in properties located within a radius of approximately 300 meters from where the monkey was found.

According to the city hall, vaccination coverage monitoring is also being carried out in homes.

The city government also emphasizes that the doses are free and available at all 152 health centers in the city.

Yellow fever

Yellow fever is also a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, Haemagogus and Sabethes (in the wild cycle) and by Aedes aegypti (in the urban cycle).

However, according to the Ministry of Health, in Brazil the predominant cycle is the wild one.

In the wild cycle, non-human primates are the main hosts of the virus and are infected by the disease.

Humans end up being secondary hosts when the mosquito bites a primate or another infected human and transmits the virus to another person through the bite as well.

Therefore, it is wrong to say that yellow fever is caused by monkeys.
