Yellow from Bolzano, Benno Neumair confesses: “I killed my parents”

He had asked to be heard by the magistrates. And in the end Benno Neumair, the thirty-year-old arrested on charges of killing his parents and throwing the bodies into the Adige, confessed everything. In the Bolzano prison, where he is being held, the young man told investigators that he strangled his mother Laura Perselli and his father Peter Neumair and then disposed of the bodies.
And to say that, just a few weeks ago, he had confidently confided to his lawyers: “I’m not a murderer, now they suspect me, but sooner or later everyone will understand what the truth is.”

In fact, he held his terrible secret in his heart.

A horrible crime, which took place on January 4th. Laura and Peter Neumair were killed in their home, the same one they shared with their son. Deep down, she felt it could happen. Many months ago she had confessed to her friends that her boyfriend gave her so much to think about. And that he feared for his own life. Words that now ring in the air like a terrible prophecy. Benno told prosecutors that he killed his father in a fight on the afternoon of January 4, while his mother was not at home. When she returned, he would attack and strangle her. Therefore, he would have made the bodies disappear by throwing them into the Adige. Soon after, the young man went to a friend’s house to build an alibi.

Maybe Benno was hoping to get away with it. Or, perhaps, he imagined that sooner or later it would be discovered. The fact is that it was he himself, on January 5, that is, the day after the crime, who went to the police to raise the alarm. Then, he made himself available for the parents’ searches, accompanying the rescuers along the mountain paths that they used to frequent. But, while on the one hand he was busy helping the research, on the other he was constructing alibis and trying to hide the evidence. Too bad the investigators were keeping an eye on him: his behavior was suspicious from the start. So, first they stopped him in a car wash while he was preparing to clean the car used to transport the bodies of his parents. Then they found in his house a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, usually used by hunters to make the traces of game blood disappear. In the end, after the Adige returned the body of his mother Laura on 6 February and the autopsy ascertained that the woman was strangled, Benno was arrested.

The thirty-year-old refused to speak immediately, making use of the right not to answer. But then, in prison, something must have clicked in his mind. Hence the confession. The magistrates asked for a probative incident to establish whether the young man, who in the past had problems such as to require psychiatric treatment, is capable of understanding and willing. Meanwhile, the search for his father continues in the Adige.
