In agreement on ceasefire in Yemen for two months all the warring parties ended, the UN announced today.
The ceasefire will take effect from tomorrow, Saturday, April 2, when Ramadan begins. Ships carrying fuel will be allowed to enter the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeidah. There will also be flights from the capital Sanaa airport to predetermined destinations.
THE Hans Grundbergthe UN special envoy for Yemen, said the ceasefire could be extended, with the consent of all parties.
Earlier, the Yemeni government, backed by Saudi Arabiahad announced that it agrees with the UN proposal, the aim of which is to address the very serious humanitarian crisis in the country.
The Χούθι Which are supported by Iran – also welcomed the ceasefire, by posting on Twitter, as broadcast by APE BPE, citing AFP and Reuters.
The internationally recognized government’s foreign ministry said in response to “regional and international firefighting initiatives” that detainees had been asked to be released, Sanaa airport had to be opened and ships carrying fuel docked in Hodeidah. These instructions were given by the President of Yemen Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadiclarified the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Bin Mubarak in a post on Twitter.
Humanitarian crisis lasting
The Houthis overthrew Hadid’s government, ousting it from Sanaa in late 2014. A few months later, the Saudi-led coalition intervened in the civil war.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed in Yemen and 80% of the country’s population relies on foreign aid to survive.
The coalition, which controls Yemen’s maritime and airspace, had imposed exclusion in areas controlled by the Houthis, resulting in no deliveries of basic goods and fuel.
The warring parties are also discussing the exchange hundreds of prisoners. Among them are 16 Saudis, three Sudanese and President Hadi’s brother.
The last exchange of prisoners took place in 2020, as part of the confidence-building measures agreed in the 2018 peace negotiations.
