Yemen: At least 23 killed in Sanaa bombings

The death toll from airstrikes launched today by the Saudi-led military alliance in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, has risen to 23 dead, including several women and children, Al Mayadin television reported.

Allied aircraft, which intervened in the war in Yemen in 2015, hit the Al Libi district, in the northwestern part of the capital, which is in the hands of the Ansarullah movement, better known as Houthi after the family of its leaders, from 2014.

According to the television network, at least five buildings were completely destroyed and dozens more were damaged. Many people are trapped under the rubble of apartment buildings.

The fact that the bombing continued prevented ambulances from reaching the scene and forced rescue teams to suspend efforts to retrieve survivors.

Late last night, the Saudi-led military alliance announced that it was resuming airstrikes on Sanaa, following a Houthi attack on the United Arab Emirates that – for the first time – claimed the lives of people.

The Libby district houses a pilot school and an air defense training area, which were apparently considered legitimate targets.

Earlier in the day, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ballistic missiles and cruise missiles were used by the Houthis against UAE national oil company facilities as well as a construction site in the Abu Dhabi International Airport area. Emirati authorities say at least four people have been killed and five injured.

The Houthi movement warned that it would target other locations in the UAE and called on civilians and foreign companies to avoid “vital facilities” there.

The Emirates had previously said that the attack was not going to go “unpunished”. The Houthi action has been condemned internationally by several Arab countries, Western states, with the United States being the first, as well as the UN.
