At least 5 people were killed and around 30 wounded today in an explosion at a weapons depot in Laudar, one of the main cities of Abyan province in southern Yemen, a security source said.
The explosion, which was caused by an unknown cause, occurred in a warehouse located in the basement of a residential building.
At least five people were killed and around 30 injured, a security source told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that the toll was still provisional.
According to an eyewitness contacted by AFP, the two-story building completely collapsed and rescue crews are now trying to free people from the rubble.
Laudar hosts a firearms market and one of the dealers allegedly owned the warehouse, according to the same source.
In Yemen, the ownership of firearms has long been considered a key element of the culture of the residents.
The country has been torn since 2014 by war between government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebels, who are close to Iran. However, a ceasefire has been in effect since April.
The conflict has killed hundreds of thousands of people and plunged the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
