At least 32 soldiers have been killed and about 100 wounded in the past three days in northern Yemen, near the border with Saudi Arabia, in fierce fighting with Shiite Houthi rebels, sources close to the internationally recognized government’s armed forces said today.
Government troops, who have been operating since 2015 with the support of a Saudi-led military alliance, are fighting Shiite insurgents believed to be close to Iran and have occupied most of the northern part of the poorest Arab country.
Over the past three days, 32 members of the government forces, including four officers, were killed in the offensive that began on Saturday in order to drive the rebels out of Harad, in the province of Hajj, sources close to them told AFP.
About 100 other soldiers were wounded, the same sources added, adding that hostilities were continuing today.
On the other hand, 56 Houthi fighters lost their lives in allied battles and air raids, according to a source close to government forces.
The Houthis very rarely announce losses in their ranks.
According to sources quoted by Agence France-Presse, government forces have not been able to occupy the Harad area, but have been able to encircle it.
The conflict in Yemen has escalated recently. The alliance and forces loyal to the internationally recognized government are launching raids against the rebels to regain some of the territory they lost during the nearly eight years of the war.
For their part, the rebels have intensified their attacks with missiles and UAVs against neighboring Saudi Arabia and, now, against the United Arab Emirates, the other pillar of the alliance. The UAE has been a new front of the war since January.
With more than 377,000 dead, according to United Nations estimates, the war in Yemen is causing one of the worst humanitarian tragedies on the planet, with most of the population facing the specter of famine.
