Yemen: Iranian ambassador leaves Sanaa

An Iranian diplomat serving as ambassador to Yemen left the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa on Saturday, according to a senior Saudi official, as Riyadh controls the airspace of this poor and war-torn country.

Adjacent to Iran, Houthi rebels have been fighting Yemeni government forces backed by a Saudi-backed military coalition for seven years. Riyadh and Tehran are regional rivals who oppose several issues.

“The ambassador left on an Iraqi plane and is probably in Baghdad now,” he said, requesting that a high-ranking Saudi official not be named.

According to him, the departure of Ambassador Hassan Irlou was made at the request of the rebels and with the approval of Riyadh, which allowed this flight after the mediation of Iraq and Oman between the Houthis and the Saudis.

Iran has fired its envoy to the Yemeni Houthi rebel movement after the diplomat was attacked by COVID-19, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. “In order to transport (Irlu) to our country for treatment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held consultations with some countries in the region to prepare his transfer, which is in progress,” ministry spokesman Said Hatibzadeh told state media. .

Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam said on Twitter: “Under an agreement reached between Iran and Saudi Arabia through contacts with Iraq, the Iranian ambassador to Sanaa was flown on an Iraqi plane due to his health condition.”
