Yemen: Saudi-led military alliance bombs communications ministry for first time

The Saudi-led military alliance involved in the war in Yemen announced today that it had destroyed a telecommunications system used by Shiite Houthi rebels with UAVs and located at the Ministry of Communications in Sanaa.

Riyadh intervened in the conflict in the neighboring country in March 2015 to support government forces against the Houthis. Shiite insurgents, backed by Iran – Saudi Arabia’s main rival in the region – control much of the country’s northern part, including its capital.

“We have destroyed a telecommunications system used to operate UAVs” by Ansar Allah, the alliance said, according to the Saudi state-run SPA news agency.

“The Houthis are using the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Sanaa to conduct hostile operations,” he added.

An AFP correspondent in Sanaa confirmed that airstrikes by the alliance had occurred in several parts of the capital, including ministry facilities.

It could not be ascertained, at least immediately, whether the bombings had casualties.

This is the first time the alliance has targeted a ministry other than the Ministry of Defense.

According to her, today’s raids were in “reaction” to the attack on Thursday at the airport in Abha, in the southwestern part of the kingdom, near the border with Yemen.

The alliance had warned that it would take “strict action” after the attack, in which twelve civilians were injured by UAV debris that crashed at the airport after being intercepted by Saudi air defenses. The Houthis took responsibility.

“The Houthis are using ministries to launch hostile operations,” justified the alliance, which shortly before launching the strikes warned civilians to stay away from them.

The war in Yemen has escalated in recent months, with the alliance intensifying its operations against the Houthis. The insurgents, for their part, have stepped up their rocket and UAV attacks against neighboring Saudi Arabia – and, since January, against the United Arab Emirates, the second pillar of the Riyadh alliance.

With more than 377,000 dead, according to United Nations estimates, the war in Yemen has caused one of the worst humanitarian tragedies on the planet, with most of the population facing the specter of famine.
