Yemeni radicals claim missile attack on southern Israel

Yemen’s Houthi radicals claimed responsibility for a ballistic missile attack on the city of Eilat, in southern Israel, this Thursday (9).

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) struck a civilian building in Eilat last Wednesday (8).

“The identity of the UAV and details of the incident are under review,” the IDF said.

In a video statement, Houthi military spokesman Gen. Yehya Saree said the radicals fired “a series of ballistic missiles at several targets” around Eilat.

“The operation was successful and led to direct attacks on the chosen targets, regardless of whether the enemy keeps the matter secret, the Yemeni Armed Forces will continue their operations in support of our people in Gaza and until the Israeli aggression in Gaza stops ,” said Saree.

In separate press conferences on Thursday night, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said they were still investigating the case.

Earlier this week, the Houthis claimed several missile and drone attacks against Israel and warned of further attacks to come.

On Wednesday, Israel claimed to have intercepted a missile launched toward the country from the Red Sea region using the Arrow 3 anti-ballistic missile system, according to a joint statement from the Israeli Defense Ministry and the IDF.

The statement stated that the Arrow 3 is “one of the most advanced air and missile defense systems of its kind in the world.”

Last week, the IDF said it used the Arrow 2 system to successfully intercept a missile fired from the Red Sea area.

Yemen’s Houthi leader said on Oct. 10 that if U.S. forces entered the Gaza conflict directly, the group would respond by firing drones and missiles.

Iran defends the Houthis, who have been fighting a Saudi-led military alliance in Yemen since 2015, as part of its regional “Axis of Resistance”.

Saudi Arabia and its allies accuse Iran of arming and training the Houthis. But the extent of the relationship is disputed and Tehran has denied funneling weapons to Yemen.
