“Yes Day”: Jennifer Garner, handyman mom in the new Netflix movie

Saying yes to free itself from the frustrations of a monotonous life is a philosophy that America espoused when it was not yet in fashion. He proved it to us in 2008 with the film Yes Man with Jim Carrey but also 8 years later, when an established producer like Shonda Rhimes wrote a book, The year of yes, in which he explained how negative energies and panic attacks disappeared as soon as she started being proactive and responding in the affirmative to whatever came her way.

The principle is the same as Yes Day, the new film by Miguel Arteta that will arrive on Netflix on March 12 and who will see Jennifer Garner in the role of a heavy mother who, for 24 hours, will agree to say yes to all the requests that will come from her children.

Allison, as her character is called, and Carlos, played by Édgar Ramírez, are in fact a little tired of always playing the part of objectors and saying no to anything, and that’s why they decide to grant children “The day of yes” which will allow children to dictate the rules without their parents being able to free themselves in any way. This, of course, will have unexpected consequences and lead the family to go on an adventure in Los Angeles capable of putting together the pieces left behind by too many years of denial and frustration.

The plot, lively but a little obvious, is taken from the book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and allows Jennifer Garner to return to brilliant comedy after a movie, Peppermint – The Angel of Vengeance, which saw her compete at the 2018 Razzie Awards as the worst leading actress – the statuette, for the record, went to Melissa McCarthy for Puppets without glory –. At a time when the film industry continues to pay for the consequences of the pandemic, a film that recommends us to be positive and affirmative is, perhaps, the cure-all we need, regardless of whether it is a masterpiece or not.
