” You are fired ! “: Washington celebrates Donald Trump’s defeat

Some already compare the atmosphere to that of Berlin after the fall of the wall or to that of the Armistice of the Second World War … As soon as Joe Biden’s victory was announced, a crowd of Americans gathered in front of the White House, or rather the high palisade which was erected in front to keep the demonstrators at a distance. Under a great blue sky and Indian summer temperatures, the mood was high. The people, all masked, hugged, cried, shouted, danced to the sound of tom-toms while others were walking around with bottles of champagne. A mariachi band arrived in the evening. An explosion of spontaneous joy like this very democratic city hadn’t known for a long time.

“It’s wonderful to be here to celebrate the victory. I’m so happy that I can forget about negativity for at least a few hours. You can feel the positive energy of the crowd, ”says Chris Kyriaki, wearing a shirt decorated with the American flag and a large hat. A couple of blacks in their sixties adds in chorus: “It’s a very big day. It’s the return to compassion, honesty, tolerance… ”A little further on, a young mother with a mask on which is written“ Good things take time ”came with her two daughters. . “It’s great, I screamed with joy when the results came in and wanted my kids to see that. ”

“Look, it’s peaceful”

Many were there with American flags and placards. “Surrender Donald”, “This is what democracy looks like”, “You are fired”, Donald Trump’s famous line on his reality TV show. Melissa, a student, had just written, “We made it. “People predicted the worst after the elections, riots and violence but look, it’s peaceful, it’s a good-natured atmosphere. She admitted having voted mainly to get rid of Donald Trump. “But Joe Biden is going to do a good job and restore some normalcy,” she adds.

It’s not just around the White House. All of Washington is jubilant with such a concert of horns that it must have reached Donald Trump’s ears even if the police blocked an even greater perimeter from traffic than on election night. The president went to his Virginia golf course in the morning, but returned in the afternoon. Even in neighborhoods quite far from the center, people took to the streets when the victory was announced. One replants his American flag removed in protest against Donald Trump, another distributes Tequila when it is not noon. A third went to buy fireworks rockets to launch them in the square after dark.

From Miami to Chicago to San Francisco to Times Square in New York City, crowds of Joe Biden supporters gathered to celebrate the victory. The pro-Trump have also held several demonstrations, notably in Michigan and North Carolina. In the evening the party continued everywhere as the president-elect addressed the nation from Wilmington. He said again that he would do everything to “reconcile” America. “Let’s give everyone a chance,” he told supporters of Donald Trump, before promising that he would be “a president who seeks to unite, not to divide”.

In front of the White House, everyone was well aware that the euphoria would quickly subside, that the transfer of power was not going to be smooth, that the Republican Senate was going to block all the reforms … But for a day in less, they dreamed of a new era …
