“You are the only one who can help us”; Protesters in Israel ask Biden for help

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv this Saturday (1) asking for help from the President of the United States, Joe Biden.

Among those present was Avi Ofer, who has been on hunger strike for 28 days.

“President Biden, we are counting on you, you are the only one who can save us. Who can save them. They will die. We have been on hunger strike for 28 days, but they have been in hell for 239 days”, said the protester.

On Friday, Biden said Israel had proposed a deal involving an initial six-week ceasefire with a partial Israeli military withdrawal and the release of some hostages while a “permanent end to hostilities” is negotiated through mediators. .

The proposal, Biden said, also “creates a better ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power.”

The American president did not detail how this could be achieved.

The Iran-backed Islamist group has given no indication that it might voluntarily step aside or disarm.

But Israel said this Saturday (1) that there will be no formal end to the war in Gaza as long as Hamas maintains power, raising questions of timing and interpretation about Biden's truce offer, which had been positively welcomed by Hamas.

The war broke out after Hamas militants crossed the border and raided communities in southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping 253 hostages, according to Israeli records.

More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip since October 7, according to health authorities in the territory.
