California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in the Rancho Palos Verdes region after landslides in the area threaten the community and the area’s power supply. Declaring a state of emergency allows the State to direct resources to the community. More than 200 homes in the area, about 30 miles outside of Los Angeles, have been without power since Monday. “Landslides have accelerated after the storms of 2023 and 2024.” The area consists of brittle shales and soft sandstones, eroded by wind and rain. The area rises almost 450 meters above sea level, which makes it extremely vulnerable to weather conditions. Landslides triggered by climate change conditions and the region’s fragile geology demonstrate the perils of living in such unstable terrain, with the future uncertain for both people and their homes.
