You can pay with your face at all Moscow metro stations: you just need to look at the camera

At the end of July 2021, the Face Pay technology was launched in Moscow in test mode, which allows metro users to pay for travel by scanning and face recognition – then the system was available only to a thousand passengers, but already in August there were seven times more users. On September 20, the authors of the project launched the final stage of Face Pay tests, and from today, October 15, the system went into full-fledged release – the final stage has been completed and absolutely any user at any Moscow metro station can pay for travel using a face scan.

“On behalf of the mayor of Moscow, we are launching Face Pay – payment for travel using face recognition. Moscow is the first city in the world where the system has worked on such a scale. There are more than 240 metro stations. There are no analogues of Face Pay in terms of quality and ease of use for a passenger anywhere in the world, ”said Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor for Transport.

In order to gain access to this technology, the user must first download the Moscow Metro application, then register and add their photo, as well as link a bank card and a Troika card to pay for travel – it is from these accounts that funds will be charged … After that, when all the registration steps have been completed, the user only needs to go to the corresponding turnstile at the metro station (there are special stickers on the floor in front of such turnstiles), look at the camera for face recognition and just go through the turnstile. After authentication, the system will automatically write off funds from the card linked in the application.

At the same time, there is and will not be any forced connection to Face Pay – Maxim Liksutov said that this is an exclusively voluntary initiative, which, according to forecasts, will be used by 10-15% of the capital’s residents.
