You can watch in one go: 7 sensational series that ended in 2022

In 2022, a huge number of new series were released. On the other hand, I had to say goodbye to many favorite projects. For some, it was high time to retire, and some of them left undeservedly early. Among the closed projects were both long-running series (for example, The Walking Dead), and those that aroused the audience just a couple of years ago (Ozark), both original projects (Atlanta), and spin-offs of popular shows of the past years (“Better Call Saul”). About these and other best series, with which the audience said goodbye in 2022, later in the article.

Peaky Blinders

  • Genre: drama, crime.
  • Number of seasons: 6.
  • Number of episodes: 36 (55-65 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 8.4.
  • IMDb: 8.8.

British drama series about the criminal world of Birmingham in the 20s of the last century, in which the populous Shelby family became one of the most violent and influential gangster gangs of the post-war period. It was created in 2013 by order of the BBC and is based on real events. The first season brought together more than two million people from the screens. The series attracted an intriguing plot, non-childish stories, as well as impeccable acting, in particular Cillian Murphy, the leading actor. And in several episodes you can see Tom Hardy and Adrien Brody.

The series has surprisingly high ratings from both critics and viewers on all possible aggregators, and recent seasons have attracted even larger audiences. Therefore, the news of the closure of the project was very unexpected, but most likely true. You have to be able to leave on a high note. True, a full-length film has already been announced, which will continue the story told in the series.

“The Walking Dead” (The Walking Dead)

  • Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller.
  • Number of seasons: 11.
  • Number of episodes: 177 (40-65 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 8.0.
  • IMDb: 8.1.

The Walking Dead is a 2010 comic book series developed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) that has become a true pop culture phenomenon. The franchise led the second wave of zombie popularity in the 21st century (the first was during the Resident Evil era in the early 00s), spawned many spin-offs, game adaptations, and so on.

However, this project, unfortunately, could not leave when it was worth it. As a result, in addition to reviving the love of the zombie apocalypse, the series also became one of the founders of such a thing as “haytwatching”, which means “I don’t want to look through”. Many fans wrote angry comments under each new episode of the show, but still continued to watch episode after episode. Finally their pain is over. Although in fact, in the coming years, several spin-offs dedicated to the future life of some heroes will premiere at once.

“Ozark” (Ozark)

  • Genre: drama, thriller.
  • Number of seasons: 4.
  • Number of episodes: 44 (40-65 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 7.9.
  • IMDb: 8.5.

The Netflix hit “Ozark” with Jason Bateman also came to its logical conclusion in 2022 at the peak of its popularity. It was thanks to the support of the streaming giant that the project, unremarkable at first glance, received a huge audience, which launched the effect of word of mouth, and by the final season was in the status of one of the main crime series of our time. Ozark tells the story of financial consultant Marty Bird, who moves with his family to a house near the Lake of the Ozarks to launder money for a Mexican drug lord. In a new place, he will have to find opportunities to improve his finances, get along with his neighbors and not get caught by the FBI, which is on his trail.

Jason Bateman played the title role in the series and is now considered one of his best works on television. And while the latest episodes have left some fans confused, it still doesn’t compare to the collapse of the final episodes of some Game of Thrones.

“Better Call Saul” (Better Call Saul)

  • Genre: drama, thriller.
  • Number of seasons: 6.
  • Number of episodes: 63 (40-60 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 8.3.
  • IMDb: 8.9.

Ozark, by the way, is often compared to Breaking Bad. Although in my opinion, the projects are quite different. But what really resembles in spirit the mentioned criminal masterpiece is its own spin-off – Better Call Saul. Bob Odenkirk returned as attorney Saul Goodman to tell the character’s story before he met Walter White. In 2015, many fans of the original series genuinely did not understand why this slippery type was chosen as the hero for the spin-off. However, the producers obviously knew what they were doing.

During the first four seasons of Better Call Saul, Bob Odenkirk was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Moreover, the spin-off impressed the audience so much that after the final episode, disputes began about whether it surpassed the eminent original?

“World of the Wild West” (Westworld)

  • Genre: fantasy, drama, detective.
  • Number of seasons: 4.
  • Number of episodes: 36 (50-90 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 7.9.
  • IMDb: 8.5.

The HBO sci-fi western series produced by J. J. Abrams was based on the 1973 film of the same name and featured an amusement park with androids instead of rides. The project was very different from the original. Instead of a thriller, viewers got a fantastic drama in which the focus was shifted from people to robots and their experiences. The cast brilliantly coped with the transfer of the emotions of the characters, according to critics, “worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster.” And they are right, because the series starred Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Tessa Thompson and many more stars of the first magnitude.

The plot and visual component of the project also greatly impressed both critics and viewers. It is not surprising, since each season was created within two years. It is a pity that such quality is very rare in long-term projects.

“Atlanta” (Atlanta)

  • Genre: Drama, Comedy, Music.
  • Number of seasons: 4.
  • Number of episodes: 41 (25-35 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 7.8.
  • IMDb: 8.6.

In 2016, the Atlanta project began as an attempt to capture the spirit of the times and show why the city of the same name is considered the cradle of modern hip-hop, but gradually the creators moved away from realism and decided to talk about the eternal. Short episodes of the show now and then turned into mini-masterpieces in different genres (horror, sitcom, surreal thriller and even a commercial).

The second season of the series was released in 2018, and in 2019 it was announced that the show was renewed for the third and fourth seasons, which were eventually developed over the course of three years. They both came out in 2022. And if the third season slightly spoiled the legacy of the series with ridiculous episodes, then the final fourth proved that the audience was really lucky to witness something unique and inimitable. Ern’s adventures in Atlanta are firmly entrenched in history. And Donald Glover, who played the title role and wrote most of the material, became a star.

“Legends of Tomorrow” (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow)

  • Genre: fantasy, superhero.
  • Number of seasons: 7.
  • Number of episodes: 110 (40-45 minutes).
  • Kinopoisk: 6.2.
  • IMDb: 6.8.

Back in 2012, The CW’s Arrow was able to do what Warner Bros. bosses couldn’t. – create a DC comics universe. Already in the second season of the show, the Flash appeared, which received its own spin-off. Further in the same universe, such series as Supergirl, Black Lightning and Batwoman appeared. The Legends of Tomorrow project, which was launched in 2016 as a platform for minor characters to shine, stood out against the general background.

The series, of course, was not the most successful, but certainly not terrible, like Batwoman. Therefore, it is a little disappointing that the open ending of the last seventh season will remain such. Also in 2022, the last season of Stargirl was released, the heroine of which first appeared in the global crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, and then participated in several episodes of Legends of Tomorrow.
