“You can’t have New Year’s Eve with insecurity”, says Mayor of Salvador

This Monday morning (29), the city of Salvador announced that the Bahian capital will not hold this year the “Festival Virada Salvador”, an event that would be promoted for the New Year’s Eve party.

In an interview with CNN, Mayor Bruno Reis (DEM) said that the insecurity scenario is the main reason for the cancellation of the New Year’s festivities.

“In view of this scenario of uncertainty, of uncertainty, mainly because of what we are seeing in Europe, the increase in new cases, and especially now, with the arrival of a new variant. Faced with this scenario of insecurity, there is no way to carry out an event of this proportion. We understand that this is not the time to take risks right now”, he explained.

Asked about the situation at Carnival, the mayor said that the decision will only be taken further on.

“We are trying to make the most of this decision within a scenario that has greater security. At this moment, it is not possible to decide. Our expectation was to be able to decide by the beginning of December, but given these facts that we are following, we have no answers. An effort has been made so far, but it may not yet be time to take risks, we will see the effects of the three doses of vaccines. The decision will be postponed and there is still no deadline.”

Reis said the situation is not one of despair, but that new restrictive measures could be taken if the number of Covid-19 cases increases again.

“The situation is not hopeless. Today, the use of masks is still mandatory here, we have measures to enter public and private spaces, we comply with protocols. Let’s await the answers from science regarding this variant. I will not hesitate to take action if necessary. If there is a risk of third wave, we will take measures again.”

The mayor also warned the population to complete the vaccination cycle against the coronavirus.

“We have 252,000 people who have not returned for the second dose. We have a universe of 142,000 people who could already take the third dose. We make an appeal for these people to come back. In order to preserve the achievements we have achieved so far, it is important for the population to be aware of this.”
