Young hostage appears in video released by Hamas: “She seems to be in a lot of pain”, says mother

The family of Mia Schem, who appeared in the first hostage video released by Hamas, asked the Israeli government and world leaders this Tuesday (17) to help bring her home.

“I’m begging the world to bring my baby back home, she just went to a party to have fun and now she’s in Gaza and she’s not the only one,” Keren Scharf Schem, the young woman’s mother, told reporters in Tel Aviv, referring to the electronic music festival held in southern Israel, which was the target of a coordinated Hamas terrorist attack.

At least 260 people were killed, according to the Israeli Zaka rescue service, and some participants were taken hostage.

While holding a photo of her daughter, Keren Scharf Schem said she didn’t know if her daughter was dead or alive until last Monday. All she knew was that she might have been kidnapped.

A CNN could not independently verify where and when Mia Schem’s video was taken and what condition she is in at the time.

“I saw that she is alive, I saw that she was… I heard rumors that she was shot in the shoulder or in the leg, so I can see that she was shot in the shoulder, I see that she had surgery.”

“She seems to be very scared, she seems to be in a lot of pain, and I can see that she says what she is told to say,” she told reporters.

She described her reaction when she first saw the video released by Hamas. “I started screaming, I fell to the ground and screamed. I didn’t really know what I was seeing, and I saw my baby.”

“Then we started crying and [pensar]: ‘Wow, she’s alive!’, and we were so happy. Then I got scared. It’s a rollercoaster,” she added.

Schem’s brothers, also speaking to journalists, said they “trust the government and all leaders in the world to do whatever is necessary to bring all the hostages back.”

Hamas has said it is holding up to 250 hostages captured during the Oct. 7 attack. A spokesman for the group said it was not possible to determine the exact number of hostages due to constant Israeli airstrikes, which he claimed killed 22 captives. A CNN could not verify the claims.

The Israeli military said on Monday that at least 199 people were being held hostage in Gaza.
