Young man catches human scabies after using equipment at the gym; know how to prevent

A young Brazilian woman used her TikTok profile to report a situation she experienced after going to a gym. She said she had low immunity after a urinary tract infection. After returning to training, she began to see small dots appear on her body.

“I thought it was an allergy. It started with some sporadic and very timid little balls. And they itched a lot. Throughout the day, the amount of balls increased and then I got scared. It itched in an inexplicable way. I went to a pharmacy and took an antiallergic injection. It didn’t help, it was the same thing as water”, reports the young woman, identified as Cintia Lima.

When explaining the situation to a doctor, Cintia discovered that it was a skin infection, not an allergy. At that point, on the third day since the onset of symptoms, the spots had also appeared on the back, buttocks and arms.

According to her, the allergist asked if she lay down somewhere. “It only went to the gym, I thought, because it was the only place I went after I got back from my trip and I remembered the rotten mat I lay down to do sit-ups. The balls appeared in greater quantity inside the leg. And I had trained my leg two days before, in the adductor chair, ”she explains.

She explained that she had to use two antibiotics – one in ointment and another orally –, in addition to an antiallergic drug. “I spent two weeks without being able to lift weight, because the antibiotic lowers your immunity. Apart from the healing process, which was only getting worse. I got spots all over my leg and three weeks later I still have marks to tell the tale,” she says.

Now, Cintia is taking disinfectant spray and passing it on the devices before use. When he gets home, he goes straight to the shower, without sitting on the couch or bed. “Stay there, be careful, clean everything.”

Is getting an infection at the gym common?

According to dermatologist Eduarda Porello, Cintia’s case is scabies, popularly known as human scabies. Caused by a mite that infects the most superficial layer of the skin, the disease is much more common than you might think and is not exclusive to academia. The disease can be acquired after contact with an infected person or a contaminated surface.

“This mite lives outside human skin for up to four days. That’s why we can take it in places where we lie down or lean on, not necessarily just in the gym. What is important to mention is that this mite lives on clothes for a few days. Therefore, it is imperative to wash clothes and bed sheets during treatment, ”he explains.

About low immunity, Eduarda says that the infection is not directly related to the immune system, since scabies is quite common and everyone can get it.

“What happens is that patients with low immunity, or who are immunocompromised – who have a disease that suppresses the immune system – can have a severe form, a very aggressive case of scabies.”

how to prevent

The doctor says that an option to kill the mite is using spray disinfectant. Another way is washing with soap and water, but this turns out to be difficult to do in the gym.

“That’s why it’s important to always wash all clothes. If you got infected and slept in bed, that mite goes to the sheet. Then the person undergoes the treatment –oral and topical–, but does not clean the bed linen, and may become reinfected. Even taking the medicine, the mite remains in the environment. The treatment has started, take all the clothes you have worn in the last few days and wash them with soap and water or hot water”, he concludes.
