Young man electrocuted in Rio: videos show electrical wiring exposed to rain

Images provided by witnesses to the family of João Vinícius Ferreira Simões, aged 25, who died after being electrocuted during a music festival, show that, during the storm on Saturday night (9), the electrical wiring of the food court set up in the area The exterior of the Riocentro to house the food trucks was exposed in the middle of the water

Simões died in the early hours of Sunday (10) after being shocked during the I Wanna Be Tour festival. He received the electric shock when he pulled into a food truck.

In the videos, one of the event's attendees shows that, after the physical education student was rescued, the food area was closed and the shows continued.

“Absurd: the guy got shocked there, left in an ambulance and the Simple Plan show started. This is absurd! It’s absurd!”, said the boy in the recording.

According to witnesses, the young man died after touching a food truck in the event's food court and receiving an electric shock. At the IML, they informed the boy's mother that João had the mark of an electrical conductor on his back, which would confirm the contact.

Juliana Oliveira, 23 years old, was next to João when he received the flush. She says that moments before she was also shocked at the food truck, but with less intensity.

“We were talking and João said he was going to get up so he could get out of there. That he was going to try to talk to someone, go somewhere a little better, more covered, and everything. He tried to get up and kind of lost his balance and leaned over with his arm,” he says.

“When he touched it with his arm, his arm was all wet, I saw that he took a much bigger discharge. And I tried to say something to, like, be careful. He had already taken the first shock that made him fall. And in that he fell, he stayed. He fell backwards towards me. I tried to put my hand on him, but when I tried to put my hand on him, his shoulder, as he had his back to me, his shoulder touched the trailer.”

“I saw that it was leaning against the trailer, if I touched it I would also get an electric shock. I saw that his hand was bent, crooked, he was all crooked”, reported the young woman, who lives in Cabo Frio but intends to give a statement.

Juliana also said that she was afraid to touch the victim and even screamed for the food truck's circuit breaker to be turned off. “When they hung up I saw what his condition was like: his tongue was purple, his eye was already becoming dull, and more people tried to put their hands on him, and that was when the guy started giving him cardiac massage,” recalled the young woman. .

According to the family, five witnesses went to the Taquara Police Station (32nd DP) this Thursday (14), but only two were interviewed. The allegation to dismiss the others, according to the boy's mother, Roberta Ferreira, was that the facts narrated were very repetitive and that new elements would be needed to contribute to the investigations.

The Civil Police had difficulty carrying out the investigation, as the location was not preserved. In a complementary analysis in Riocentro, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday morning (12), experts inspected the food truck where a young man was allegedly electrocuted. The truck had been removed from the location where the accident occurred and was empty.

Riocentro informed that it only rented the space to hold the festival. A CNN contacted 30e, responsible for the organization, but received no response. The producer's only manifestation was on social media. The organizers said that all efforts were made by the event's medical teams and that they deeply regret what happened, which is being investigated with the authorities.
