A young woman suffered third-degree burns last Saturday night (9), while celebrating her graduation in a restaurant in Rio Grande, on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, around 320 kilometers from Porto Alegre.
According to family and friends of Jaqueline Tedesco, the accident happened while an employee was refilling a fondue device with a flammable liquid. The young woman remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Santa Casa do Rio Grande.
Jaqueline celebrated her law degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande. On social media, the university's Central Student Directory (DCE) lamented what happened and stated that cases of negligence cannot go unpunished.
The young woman was the first indigenous woman to occupy the General Coordination of the DCE and is a member of the Kizomba Movement, which fights for indigenous rights.
The student's family stated that there was negligence and failure to provide assistance on the part of the establishment and that Jaqueline's mother and boyfriend, who were also there at the time of the accident, did not receive any support from the restaurant.
In a statement published on social media, the Le Petit restaurant stated that it provided assistance to the customer and an employee, who was also injured in the incident. The establishment expressed concern and regret regarding the case.
Wanted by CNN the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul stated that the circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the agency and that several steps are underway to investigate the facts.
The young woman's family members filed a police report. Police chief Maiquel Fonseca, responsible for the case, stated that the victim's mother clarified what could have happened.
“A police report was filed by the victim's mother, reporting that a bottle of alcohol had exploded when a restaurant employee was trying to fill the fondue machine,” said the police chief.
